Thoughts on a FNP 9mm

I'm in the market for a full size 9mm pistol. My initial choices were the Glock 19, or the XD 9mm. I was at my gun dealer yesterday and was talking this over with him. He had me handle and dry-fire the G-19, the XD and the FNP 9. He is a huge FN fan and I will admit that the feel of the FNP felt much more like an extension of my hand and I lije the feel of the trigger better on the FNP, much more crisp. He says he can sell the FNP for $600, but I'm sure I can get a better deal on a G-19 elsewhere.

Need input here! He has definite opinions on the FNP and is not a Glock fan. I've never owned a Glock, but I know many here do.

Edit, sorry,forgot the link;

Not a fan of the Glock in .40 because the cases are bulged (weakened) on ejection. The G19 is the PERFECT utilitarian firearm. High capacity, excellent accuracy, and just one very important button - the trigger.

That said, if you want something that will feel like it was born in your hand, try the CZ P-01. The only pistol certified for use by NATO forces. It is about 6 ounces heavier than the G19, but it is basically the same size. Hold one if you can!

If you plan on practicing and shooting for fun, go with the CZ. If you are only going to shoot through one box and then keep it in a nightstand, get the Glock.

PS - The Glock uses polygonal rifling meaning that you can't shoot cast lead (unjacketed) bullets through it. This is one reason I switched to the CZ P-01.

.

The section I bolded summarizes my reasons for wanting the Glock 19. I practice with almost all of my handguns and I already have 2 9mm pistols, but want a full size, high cap 9mm. My dealer is really in love with the FNP, but I'm still leaning strongly to the G19.

I have a CZ-52, but I know that the P-01 is a whole different animal. I have no doubts to the quality and workmanship of the gun and appreciate the input. I have another guy that is big into CZ firearms, the next time I'm in the area, I'll stop in at his shop and see if he's got one.

Buy one that fits your hand and you if you ever plan on using it.....really need to shoot both first if you can....

i would do a online check of any gun to see if there are function issues with a particular model

I have a Glock 19 and a 26. You either like Glocks or you don't. The mags are cheap and you can get a 33-round mag for them. But, I have an FN-9 in Dark Earth that puts the Glocks to shame. It has a decocker and a safety, making it twice as safe. I paid too much for it, nearly $650, probably because of the color and it was at a high priced gun shop. But that is what I wanted. I have seen them for $499 - $599. You get three mags with them, not the usual one or two. It fits my hand better and has a great sight picture. I just don't think enough people have tried them out. What I like best is there is hardly no gap between the bottom of the trigger and the trigger guard, a lot like an HK. You can run your finger along the bottom of the trigger guard and still engage the trigger if wearing gloves.
If you like it and it fits your hand well, then that is important. It is listed as #2 on the list of Best 9mm pistols. Do a web search and you will find it, I believe it is Best9mmpistols. If a Glock guy wrote it it would probably be different. I'm not knocking Glocks, I have my 19 and 10 loaded mags in a bug out bag in the safe. But when I go to the range, I will take the FN first.

As a principle, I would never have a defensive handgun (carry gun) with a safety. The CZ P-01 does have a decocker, and is SA/DA, but no safety on the P-01 like other CZ-75s. This is one reason I'd never get an XD even if it beats Glock in every other regard.

I've never held/shot an FN, and I don't doubt that they make an excellent handgun -- I like everything else they make -- but FN is usually a bit more expensive than other brands.

PS - The CZ is not a plastic gun. That is why it weighs a bit more than the Glock, but that is also why it doesn't feel top-heavy like the Glock.

Why are you so strong principly against a safty?

you could carry "off safe"

I personally go for gun fit, feel and reliabilty first ....then function features 2nd...I carry a Kahr PM9 or a Ruger sp101 which is are non safty guns because of fit and feel......but i would prefer a gun with a hammer, decocker, striker block safty, DA/SA etc.

Don't ever want to wonder if the gun is ready to fire. That would be pretty bad when drawing on someone who is armed -- oops... just a second while I take it off safety.

Re: Thoughts on a FNP 9mm

I once needed to grab my pistol from the nightstand in a hurry (burglars) and was amazed at how quickly my fine motor skills went away due to adrenaline rush. Seemed to take forever to flick the safety off on my S&W pistol because my thumbs didn't work very well.

Fortunately, the crisis resolved itself without much intervention on my part.

I now prefer point and shoot DA pistols or revolvers and would not carry one with an external manual safety.

I really like the CZ's. I have the 75 compact and a 85 combat.

The CZ P-07 is polymer. The CZ P-01 is not.

If polymer is your thing the FNP looks nice. I just put a down payment on a Browning BDM. Very nice if you can find one.
